Obituary

Roman M. Wagner, a life-long resident and well known farmer in the Town of West Bend, passed away August 21, 2014 at the age of 93, at Cedar Lake Health and Rehabilitation Center of West Bend. He was born February 3, 1921, to the late Philip G. and Sophia (Thoma) Wagner. On April 4, 1945, he married Audrey Nehm at St. Matthias Church, Nabob, where they have remained parishioners. He was a member of the St. Matthias Men's Society and the Knights of Columbus, and, in his early retirement years, he was an adult altar server for St. Lawrence Parish. The couple operated a dairy farm together in the town for more than four decades. Roman was known in the agricultural community as a skilled herdsman, and also received recognition for the soil and water conservation measures he put in place on his property.

He is survived by his wife, with whom he shared life for 69 years, and their five children: Ann (James Penn), Fort Myers, Fla.; Jean (Carroll) Merry, Germantown; Carl, West Bend; Lee (Kathleen Strupp), West Bend; and Helen (Robert) Trudeau, West Bend. He is further survived by five grandchildren: Jeffrey (Maria) Rash, Denver, Colo.; Scott (Cindy) Rash, Elgin, Ill.; Jennifer (Peter) Marx, Kewaskum; Michael Trudeau, Chicago, Ill.; and Christopher Trudeau, Madison; two step granddaughters: JaNelle Merry, Shiocton; and Jennifer Hargraves, Hartford; seven great-grandchildren: Damian and Kalia Rash; Rowan, Kyle and Andrew Rash; and Nolan and Parker Marx; and two step great-grandchildren: Autumn and Grant Hargraves. Five siblings also survive him: Rosemary (late Gilbert) Gundrum, West Bend; Florence (Robert) Dymale, Albuquerque,N.M. ; Fr. Vernon Wagner, OFM Cap., Mt. Calvary; Sr. Helen Wagner, SSSF, Milwaukee; and Fr. Bernard Wagner, OFM, Cap., Appleton.

He is preceded in death by his parents and two siblings: Edward P. Wagner and Marguerite (Sylvester) Scharrer; and his in-laws, Hugo and Elizabeth Nehm.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 6:00 pm, Monday, August 25, 2014 at St. Lawrence Church, on Hwy 175, Hartford with Father Vernon Wagner, brother of Roman, presiding. Visitation (at the church only) beginning at 4 p.m. and concluding with the Funeral Liturgy at 6 p.m. There will be a private burial service in St. Matthias Parish cemetery the following day. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (www.stjude.org or 800-822-6344).
