Obituary

Mary Louise Whelan (nee Marseille), age 95, of Greenfield, WI, found peace on Friday, December 19, 2014 at Clement Manor. She was born on November 22, 1919 in Chicago, IL to Charles and Mary (nee Kane) Marseille.

With her older brother, William, Mary was raised by her mother. She supported herself for many years as a secretary for Cities Service Oil Company in Chicago. Mary moved to California for a short time, before returning home and meeting her husband John "Jack," to whom she was married for 52 years. For five years, the family lived in South and Central America, followed by four years in Washington D.C. In 1973, Jack brought the family back to his home state, Wisconsin, settling and residing in West Bend for 30 years.

Mary was known to many as gracious, reserved and abundantly kind. Friends and family knew that she was also a strong-willed, progressively-minded woman with a quick wit and appreciation for humor. While selflessly frugal, Mary supported a number of non-profit organizations, and her generosity with her family underscored her role as mother and grandmother. As a devout Catholic, Mary received great comfort through the church and community at Clement Manor in her last years of life. The grace with which she approached each day will continue to inspire those whose lives she touched.

Mary is survived by her children, Cynthia (Robert) Schermacher and David (Victoria) Whelan; her grandchildren, Jessica Schermacher, Myka Schermacher, Elizabeth Whelan and Charles Whelan. Mary is preceded in death by her husband John; son Leo (Sarah); brother William (and wife Mary) Marseille; sisters-in-law Margaret (and husband Dean) Kellogg, Cecelia (and husband Robert) Risch; Patricia (and husband Eugene) Timmel, Rosemary (Robert) Tittlefitz and Joan Whelan.

Mass will be held at Clement Manor Chapel, 3939 South 92nd Street in Greenfield, WI on Monday, December 22, 2014 at 10:30 am with Father Bill Stout officiating. Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass. Memorials may be sent to Clement Manor Chapel or the Holy Angels Conference, St. Vincent de Paul Society, West Bend. A private interment will take place at Washington County Memorial Park in West Bend at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, December 22, 2014.

A special thank you to the Nuns, Chaplains and Administrators at Clement Manor Retirement Complex.
