Karl S. Gentz, age 96, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 11, 2025 at Cedar Lake Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born on June 24, 1928 in Blackwell, WI to Frank C. and Cora M (nee Akey) Gentz. Karl grew up in Blackwell where he enjoyed hunting and fishing, and helping on the family farm. He attended Wabeno High School and played on the football team. Following service in the Army, he moved to Milwaukee. He worked for Milwaukee County Parks for many years, and retired to live in Mayville in 1992.
Karl is survived by his wife of nearly 75 years, Loretta (nee Paff) Gentz; his daughter, Sheryl Gentz; his grandson, Steven Morales, and his great-grandchildren, Tiegan, Riley and Amaris. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Karl is preceded in death by his son, Mark; his seven siblings and their spouses, Bob (Jeanette/Agnes), Mary (Nick) Strand, Jean (Del) Clavette, Jane (Harold) Kirsch, Fred (Bea), Phil (Irene), Dave (Marge). In addition, he is preceded by Loretta's siblings and their spouses, Ione (Clarence) Block, Valerie (Ray) Darga, and Mannie (Frances) Paff.
Karl loved his large family of brothers, sisters, brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law. He loved dogs, and grudgingly admitted that he liked his various grandcats. He loved the outdoors in all seasons. He loved to pile the family in the car every summer and take a road trip across the country. In his retirement years he and Loretta traveled to Hawaii several times, and loved every moment of those trips. He enjoyed the vegetable garden that he planted every year, and patiently cared for the flowers that Loretta planted. He was a great fan of the Packers and the Brewers, and enjoyed watching a Brewers game on one of his last good days. Sadly, the Brewers lost that game. Karl was an active member of his union for many years, and continued in the retirees group. He was a lifelong faithful Catholic.
A Memorial Service will be at 11:30am on Friday, May 9, 2025 at the Phillip Funeral Home Chapel (1420 W Paradise Dr. West Bend, WI 53095). Visitation will be at the funeral home on Friday, May 9, from 10:00am until 11:15am. Interment will be on a later date at Resurrection Cemetery in Mequon.
The family is immensely grateful to the staff at Cedar Community and CommonHeart Hospice for their kind and compassionate care of Karl.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are appreciated to Cedar Community (113 Cedar Ridge Drive, West Bend, WI 53095).
