Karen Scharinger, age 83, passed away peacefully January 13,2026, leaving behind a life defined by learning, teaching, and a deep love for nature. Born May 1, 1942, in Sheboygan, WI, to John and Wilma Scharinger. Karen attended Central High School, graduating in 1960 as part of the school’s final graduating class. She was an active student involved in The National Honor Society, Student Council, and the American Red Cross.
Karen earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology Education and Sociology from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1965 and later received her Master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
She began her teaching career in 1965 in West Bend, Wisconsin, where she taught 7th-grade Life Sciences for 34 years. Teaching was not just her profession but her passion. Karen loved nature and the environment and was deeply dedicated to sharing that love and respect with her students. She was honored twice as Conservation Teacher of the Year and founded an Ecology Club that provided students with hands-on environmental experiences beyond the classroom. She also organized educational speeches and activities each year during National Wildlife Week, inspiring generations of students to appreciate and protect wildlife.
Outside the classroom, Karen found joy in traveling, camping, hiking and horseback riding. She also was an avid reader and took great pride in decorating her home for every holiday that truly fulfilled her heart and brought joy to all who visited. Anyone who knew Karen was familiar with the warmth of her festive home, as well as her beloved peanut butter balls and mint brownies, which became a cherished part of many holiday celebrations. Karen’s love of nature, birds, and animals guided her throughout her life. In her later years, her beloved cat, Sweety, was a constant companion and source of comfort.
Karen is survived by her niece Dawn (Shawn) Covey of Sheboygan Falls, several nephews Glenn (Tracy) Smies of Sheboygan Falls, David (Patricia)Scharinger of Leavenworth, KS, Daniel (Mary) Scharinger of Fon Du Lac, Michael (Kimberly) Scharinger of Sheboygan, Kevin Schraringer of Sheboygan, and Brian (Rebecca) Scharinger of Kewaskum, and many great nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, brother, and sister.
A Mass of Chrisitan Burial for Karen will be held on Friday, February 6th ,2026 at 11 A.M. at St. Francis Cabrini in West Bend. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM-10:45 A.M.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to Karen Ramthun, Rhea and Al Arents, and to the many neighbors, friend, and family members whose compassionate care and support allowed Karen to remain in her home for many years. Karen was also blessed by close friendships, especially her dear friends Barb Speer, who remained by her side through her final days. Family would also like to thank Cedar Community for their compassionate and patient care.
