On January 30, 2026, Joseph Michael Tomaszewski passed away peacefully with family by his side. While the certificate may list a cause, those who knew and loved him understand that after the loss of his wife Mary Beth of 56 years just weeks earlier, Joe died of a broken heart.
Joe was born on September 27, 1948, to John and Julia Tomaszewski in Ladysmith, Wisconsin. He spent his formative years in the close-knit farming community of Hawkins, Wisconsin, growing up alongside his brother, Robert, and sister, Judy Heino. Those early years shaped a lifelong work ethic, generosity, and commitment to helping others.
In high school, Joe was active in basketball, baseball and track, balancing sports with farm chores and a willingness to lend a hand wherever needed. He later attended WCTC, where he trained as a toolmaker, creating die-cast molds for products still in use today.
After settling in West Bend, Wisconsin with his wife Mary, Joe raised his three children—Michelle, Sheri, and John (wife Mandy). He was a proud grandfather to eight grandchildren and a great-grandfather to one great-granddaughter. Joe was rarely still. He spent his free time playing and coaching bowling, managing Little League, golfing, serving as a leader with BSA Troop 762, where he oversaw transportation for the boys, or out for a drive on a sunny day. A devoted member of the Lions Club, Joe rose to the role of District Governor through years of service.
Joe was a kind, humble man who loved his family and served his community without expectation of recognition. He had a sharp sense of humor, could strike up a conversation with anyone, and earned respect through hard work, integrity, and genuine care for others.
A joint memorial service will be held to honor the lives of Joseph and Mary Beth on Thursday, February 19,2026 @ 6:00 P.M. at Phillip Funeral Home in West Bend. Visitation will be from 4:00- 5:45 P.M. There will be a memorial service to be held in Ladysmith, WI at a later date.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the Avina Community in Mayville, Generations Hospice for their compassion, and Life star for their friendly and dedicated service.
