Obituary

JOAN RUDD, 92

On the morning of August 16, 2024, after a long earthly journey, Joan (Joann) Beverly Rudd (nee Zipoy), was received into the heavenly arms of God. As we grieve, we also rejoice for her.

Joan was born on February 10, 1932, in Minneapolis, MN, to Thomas and Elvera (nee Lewis) Zipoy. Joan was a devoted mother, dedicated grandma and great grandma, and faithful friend to many who will live in our hearts forever. She gave us all a lifetime of unconditional love and stability.

Joan Zipoy (better known as, "Zip"), met Don Rudd while she was attending Gustavus Adophus College in St. Peter, MN and he was attending the University of Minnesota in St. Cloud. He had first caught a glimpse of her in a newspaper clipping where she was pictured as a beautiful Minneapolis Aquatennial Queen.

They were set up on a blind date by a friend and following that date it became quickly apparent that they were the eternal love of each other's lives. They were united in marriage on September 15, 1951, at the Emmanual Lutheran Church in Minneapolis, MN and shared 63 years in a loving Marriage.

Joan's family was the center of her life. She was a steady source of comfort and guidance to her kids, and her grandkids remembered her for her sense of humor, generous trips to KB Toys and McDonalds while they were growing up, and her grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup which were the best they had ever had.

Joan had a 20+ year Career with Hallmark, as Manager of stores in West Bend, where her skills in management, buying inventory and her keen sense of design were utilized. She loved her job, often saying even if she were not paid, she still would have wanted to continue working with Hallmark.

After retirement from Hallmark, Joan and Don called Lake Havasu, AZ their home for the next 20 winters where they escaped the cold Wisconsin snow for warmer weather a few months out of every year. It was there, she met many close friends, spent time enjoying the outdoors, went to pool parties, and traveled to other cities in Arizona. They enjoyed retirement to its fullest and had the pleasure of taking many cruises throughout the world together.

As the years flew by and her beautiful hair turned a natural snowy white, her smile continued to light up any room. She met many new friends when she resided at Serenity Assisted Living, where she enjoyed having lunch with, "the girls," spending time outdoors, tending the garden that encircled her window, and listening to music. She forever looked forward to family visits from her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren who caused her face to light up every time they visited.

Joan was preceded in death by her loving husband, Donald; cherished parents, Elvera and Thomas; beloved brother, William; and beloved sister, Helen.

She is forever loved and cherished by her three children:  Mary Rudd Immekus, Peter (Mary) Rudd, and Timothy (Laurie) Rudd. She was beloved Grandmother to:  Julia (Alan) Webb, David (Celina) Rudd, Jacob (Calena) Rudd, Eric (Sarah) Rudd, Molly Rudd, Luna Rudd, Kayla (Ben) Eastman, and Matt Rudd. Joan is further survived by her cherished great grandchildren:  Joanie, Paula, Gabriella, and Bridget Webb (Julia and Alan); Blaise, Ksenia, Fabian, and Frederic Rudd (Jacob and Calena); Vincient, Celine and Catherine Rudd (David and Celina); Michael Rudd (Eric and Sarah); Charlie Eastman (Kayla and Ben); and three more "on the way" (Julia and Alan, Kayla and Ben, Jacob and Calena).  She is also survived by other relatives (brother, Roger Zipoy and Sister-in-law, Bonnie Zipoy) and friends.
