Obituary

Florence C. Mayer, (nee Clark), age 100, of Milwaukee, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 29, 2014, at The Kathy Hospice. Florence is now with her husband the late Frank Mayer. She was born on July 16, 1914, in Mystic, Connecticut to Charles L. and Lillian S. (nee Olssen) Clark. Florence was raised in an orphanage where she learned handwork, cooking and other talents. Her father was a cabinet maker who worked outside the orphanage but was always near. Florence met Frank X. Mayer at the orphanage and they married on May 31st, 1934.

Florence utilized her handiwork abilities creating clothing for her three girls. She also took great pride in her flower and vegetable garden which she had in Fernandina Beach FL. She was a homemaker who loved to bake for her family and took a special interest in her ceramics. She was an active member of St. Michael's Catholic Church until she moved to Milwaukee in 2008. In the late 1980's she was involved in the start up of what is now known as the Barnabus Center where it began in a small room at the then St. Joseph's Academy; she was an active member of the council of Catholic Women and donated many handmade items for their annual Bazaar right up until the end of her life. Her little "bear" ornaments were recently featured in the Fernandina Beach News Leader. She was also active in the Red Hat Society and AARP. Once relocating to WI Florence became a member of St. Lawrence Church and enjoyed quilting as a hobby.

Florence is survived by her four children Theresa (John) Megna, Kay (Herb) Kieferndorf, Jim Mayer and Lillian (John Watson) Crotts; grandchildren Rick (Jenny) Kieferndorf, Paula (Dale) Kieferndorf, Terri (Charles) Nettles, Jayne (Rick) McLeod, Angie (Jeff) McMean and Allison Dorsey; 10 great-grandchildren; niece Cynthia (the late Skip) McCormack; nephews Victor and Willie Cutts and Leo Smith Jr.; other relatives and friends. Preceded in death by her parents; husband Frank; sisters Lillian (Leo) Smith, Becky (A.V.) Cutts and Ann (Ray) Hillis; granddaughter Carla and nephews Leonard Cutts and Leo Smith Jr.

A Memorial Service will be held at Luther Haven (8949 N. 97th St.), Milwaukee on Wednesday December 3, 2014 at 11 AM with Fr. Davies Edassery of St. Lawrence Catholic Church officiating. Visitation will be held at Luther Haven from 10 AM until the time of the service. Memorials to The Kathy Hospice appreciated.
