Douglas "Dutch" Joseph Luckow, 75, passed peacefully surrounded by his family on Monday, March 24, 2014. Douglas was born December 23, 1938 to Albert Otto and Emma Rose (Orr) Luckow in Grand Rapids, Minnesota.
One of his first jobs was on the Duluth, Missabe, and Iron Range Railway working as a "gandy dancer" laying track. As a teenager, Douglas joined the United States Army and was a Military Police officer and security courier. He served both domestically and abroad, including a deployment for over a year in the Philippines.
While on leave from the Army, he visited Evansville, Indiana where he met and later married the love of his life, Bonita Faye Staub. Settling there, he was employed at Whirlpool and did automotive work part time. He also owned a stock car which raced at Haubstadt Motor Speedway in Haubstadt, Indiana.
In 1965, the family moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin where Doug was employed at the Speedometer Service Company which he purchased and operated for the remainder of his career. In 1970, the family moved to West Bend, Wisconsin.
In retirement, Doug enjoyed woodworking and hand carving. He created furniture, toys, and figurines that he loved giving as gifts, especially to his grandchildren. Doug was also an avid sportsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing and a lifetime member of the Loyal Order of Moose, Lodge #1398. Doug and Bonnie spent many years RV traveling throughout the US and traveled abroad extensively.
Douglas is survived by his wife of 56 years, Bonita and his children Roger (Trudi) Luckow of West Bend, WI, Karoline (Steven) Roehl of West Bend, WI, Randal Luckow of Los Angeles, CA, Kathleen (Anthony) Gigante of West Bend, WI, and Kelli (Vernon) Schultz of Kewaskum, WI. He is already deeply missed by his beloved grandchildren: Beth, Ryan, Ashley, Alyssa, Rae, Hannah, Katelyn, Jaclyn, and Samuel. He is further survived by his siblings: Marilyn Cain of Evansville, IN, Albert (Nancy) Luckow of Milwaukee, WI, and Patrick (Shirley) Luckow of Tampa, FL, sister in law: Bettye Masterson of Palm Springs, CA, and their families.
He was preceded in death by his parents, favorite Aunt Dorothy (Dot) Mammen, and his brother Ronald Luckow.
A memorial service will be held at the Fifth Avenue United Methodist Church, 323 S Fifth Ave, West Bend on Friday March 28th, with visitation from 4:00-7:00pm and service at 7:00pm. Interment will be on Saturday, March 29th at 11:30 am in Washington County Memorial Park. Education was very important to Douglas so the family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to establish a COLUMNS Scholarship in his name.
