Obituary

Doris L. Brossmer died peacefully surrounded by family at the Lutheran Home in Wauwatosa, WI May 19, 2018 at the age of 96 yrs, 8 months and 19 days. Doris is survived by her brother, Norbert (Kathleen) Brossmer; nieces Kat Brossmer (Robert Baczynski) of New Richmond, WI, Nadine Davis of Hubertus, WI, and nephew Gerald Brossmer of Crete, IL; great-nieces and great-nephews Allison and Evan Baczinski , Kendal and Adam Davis (Rebecca) and great-great-nephews Isaac and Liam Davis.

Doris is preceded in death by her parents, Blanche and Herman Brossmer, her sisters and their husbands Florence and William Struthers (Chicago, IL ), Mary Ellen and Albert Lambert (Lake Bluff, IL), and her brother Raymond and his wife Iva Katherine (Mercer, WI.)

While Doris attended St. Louis Academy on the south side of Chicago, she was a store manager at a Dutch Mill Candy shop on the south side of Chicago. During WWII, she worked in the quality assurance for government projects department at International Harvester West Pullman Works. For most of her career, she was an engineering clerk for AT&T.

Doris was a long-time member of the International Federation of Catholic Alumni, Illinois Chapter, Chicago Circle. She served the group as Christmas Charities chairman, corresponding secretary, treasurer, and vice-governor. One of her most interesting projects was as chairman of activities for the blind, providing sources of Braille and teaching aids for blind children in parochial schools all over the country. Doris was cited by the Federation for being a good example of "the liberated woman…Catholic style."

Outside of the Federation, Doris was a reader and Eucharistic Minister, and taught catechism to challenged children at St. Catherine of Genoa Church, aided the poor and homeless, and worked on retreats at the Cenacle Retreat House on the north side of Chicago. She devoted much of her time as a volunteer for the Charismatic Renewal Office of the Archdiocese of Chicago. Doris was an avid baseball fan of the Chicago White Soxs and the Milwaukee Brewers.

She enjoyed traveling the world with friends and family with her last abroad trip to Ireland at the age of 81.

Doris and her mother, Blanche took care of each other for many years. In Doris' words, "You know, a person doesn't do these things for recognition. I can truthfully say for all the time I have given, I have received more back …."

In keeping with Doris' wishes, interment will be private.
