Donald Raymond Mertes was born August 6, 1926 in Kewaskum, Wisconsin to Clarence and Emma Mertes. He will be remembered as a hard-working man who loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren and tinkering around the house. Jesus called him home, one day short of his 98th birthday on August 5, 2024 at Kathy Hospice in West Bend, Wisconsin.
He is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Elizabeth (nee Schink), sons Michael (Sally), Mark (Kathleen), Thomas (Teresa Campbell), grandchildren Jennifer, Andrew (Kimberly), Adam, Stephen (Krista), Rebecca Blau (Thomas), Jocelyn Campbell, Alycia. He grew up in Kewaskum and spent much of his childhood working on his grandparents' farm in Dundee. He graduated from Kewaskum High School, where he was on the basketball and football teams. After high school he was drafted into the Navy. During his naval training to be a diesel mechanic, he received a dependency discharge when he learned that his father had been killed in a factory explosion back home. While back at home, he met the love of his life on a blind date, and later married Elizabeth Schink, on June 27th, 1953 in Woodland, Wisconsin. They moved to West Bend and raised their three boys, while he worked at the West Bend Company as a maintenance engineer, until his retirement in 1987. Don and his wife Betty were active members of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in West Bend for over 50 years. In retirement, they enjoyed going on cruises with friends and family, as well as playing cards and Friday fish fries.
The family would like to thank the staff at New Perspective Senior Living and Kathy Hospice.
