Obituary

Carol Ann Broman (nee Schaefer), 85, of West Bend, Wisconsin, died peacefully on January 21, 2025, surrounded by loving family and friends. She was born on May 15, 1939, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Wilmer and Mary Schaefer. She attended Rufus King High School (57) and Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, where she received bachelor's and master's degrees in chemistry. There she met her husband, Robert Broman; they were married for 62 years at his death last year.

Carol was always busy, whether working inside or outside of her home. She loved all kind of fiber arts (particularly macrame, knitting, weaving, and tatting), and gave great birthday parties for her children. She was active in the Democratic Party and the League of Women Voters in Lincoln, Nebraska, and was one of the founders of the Near South Neighborhood Association.

In 1978, Carol ran for office and became the county assessor of Lancaster County in Nebraska. (She said it was the hardest way to get a job!) While running this large office, she still found time to make everyone peanut brittle for Christmas. In 1985, she moved back to Milwaukee, WI, where she had been appointed tax commissioner of the City of Milwaukee, serving under Mayors Maier and Norquist. Who knew that she would go from chemistry to property valuation?

Carol and Bob then moved to Lawrence, Kansas, where she started a clothing consignment business, Lasting Impressions. She successfully managed the store for many years, before retiring to West Bend, Wisconsin with her husband. She didn't rest however and became busy with substitute teaching, her grandchildren, volunteering (including presiding over the Rufus King Alumni Association), and was always available to help friends.

Carol is survived by her brother Tom Schaefer (Pam) and her children, Beth Appel (Martin), Erika Broman, Andrew Broman (Giso), and Karl Broman (Aimee), as well as her grandchildren: Avi Appel (Devorah), Yossi Appel, Moshe Appel, Tova Appel, Chanie Appel, Sara Appel, Ryan Perondi (Heather), Javier Salmeron, Laurel Salmeron, Caleb Broman, and Alaina Broman, and great-grandchildren: Ahrele, Sruli, Chaim, Temmy, Mindy, Malka Appel and Marcus and Athena Perondi. She was preceded in death by her brother Jim Schaefer (Carol) and her husband Robert Broman.

She is remembered for her love and wit, and for appreciating the best in each person. We cherish her many wise aphorisms, like "It's never too late to say thank you" and "The world needs more full-length mirrors."

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00am, with the burial at 11:30am on Wednesday, January 29, at Prairie Home Cemetery, 605 S Prairie Ave, Waukesha. A celebration of life will occur on June 16, 2025, at Lac Lawrann Conservancy in West Bend. Donations in Carol's memory can be made to Friends of Lac Lawrann or the Rufus King High School Fund.
