Obituary

Betty Ann Gumm, nee Heidel was born to Albert Heidel, Jr. and his wife, Pearl, nee Herbst, on February 21, 1934, in Thiensville, WI. Betty entered God's Covenant of Grace in Holy Baptism in 1934 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Mequon, WI, by Rev. Arthur J. Mittlestadt. She confessed her faith and trust in Jesus Christ at her Confirmation in 1947, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Mequon, WI, by Rev. Arthur J. Mittlestadt.

In April of 1950, her father entered glory because of cancer. She took care of the family farm for a year. Instead of becoming a veterinarian, her first-choice profession, she studied to become an X-ray technician, a career that spanned from the age of 18 to 75. She worked at West Bend Hospital, General Clinic in West Bend, and at Cedar Lake Home where she was also the food service supervisor.

Betty entered the Holy Estate of Marriage with George Gumm on May 16, 1953, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mequon, WI. Rev. Arthur J. Mittlestadt officiated at their wedding. Betty and George made their home in Jackson, WI. God, in His grace and mercy, blessed their marriage with two sons: Alan and Thomas.

Betty and George worked with George's parents Clarence and Helen at Gumm's Tap in Jackson. In 1960, George and Betty took over the business from his parents. In 1962, they built a new tavern/restaurant next door to the old tavern. Betty was blessed with the ability to prepare fantastic meals. In 1969, Betty and George sold the tavern to her brother, Wayne Heidel and his wife, Jeanne. Betty continued doing X-ray work. In 1974, they bought a small supper club on Cedar Lake in West Bend. After about 18 months they sold the supper club. Again, Betty continued doing X-ray work until she retired in 2009.

Betty was an active member for over 60 years of the Henry F. Gumm American Legion Auxiliary Post 486 in Jackson, WI. She carried great pride of our country and for those who served in the military.

The Lord God, in His grace gave Betty a strong and living faith in Jesus as her Savior. Throughout her life Betty faithfully attended worship service, regularly and faithfully partook of the Lord's Supper, and made sure that Alan and Thomas had a solid Christian education. She sacrificed much so that her boys could prepare to serve the Lord and His Church in the public ministry. Even though in her later years, her memory wasn't so good, her faith and love for her Savior was always there and alive.

Betty is survived by her sons: Rev. Alan (Carolyn); Rev. Thomas (Carol); her grandchildren: Rev. Jeremiah (Lisa) Gumm; Joseph (Annie) Gumm; Hannah (Joey) Mueller; Vicar Jonathan Gumm; Caleb Gumm; Dr. Catherine (Brent) Brewer; Danielle (Craig) Margelowsky; Great-Grandchildren: Adelaide, Matthias, Clara, Muriel Gumm
; Benjamin, Evangeline, Aaron Gumm; Lena, Gemma, Cecilia Mueller; Emma and Elaine Margelowsky, Alonzo and Lilliam Brewer; Sisters-in-law: Jeanne Heidel and Hedy Gumm; plus, many nieces, nephews and friends.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her husband George, her sister Marlene Thome, and her brother Wayne Heidel.

Her mortal remains will await the triumphant return of our Risen and Living Lord and Savior in the cemetery at David's Star Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jackson, WI.
