Bettie Schuler, daughter of Eldon and Ida (Finck) Voigt, was born on the family farm near Avon, South Dakota on March 24, 1938. She passed away on September 12 at the age of 88.

Bettie grew up in the Avon area and graduated from Avon High School in 1956. She then attended Southern State Teachers College in Springfield, SD, where she received her teaching license. She taught in several one-room schools in the Springfield and Tripp area.

In 1958 she married Jim Schuler, the love of her life. Three children were born from this union: Cathie, Terry, and Tammy. They lived in Tripp until 1965 and then moved to West Bend, Wisconsin.
Bettie was employed by West Bend School District. In 1976 she received her bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from UW-Oshkosh by attending summer school and night classes while she was teaching. She taught at Barton Elementary for 6 years in the Reading Center, and then at McLane Elementary as a 4th grade teacher for the remainder of her teaching career until she retired in 2000 after 35 years of teaching. After retirement, she volunteered in the classrooms of her grandchildren at Greentree and McLane.

Family was very important to her. She enjoyed having her grandchildren around her often. They played board games and had plenty of sleepovers. They made many cut-out cookies together. Every Wednesday was Pizza Night when the whole family got together for pizza, and also every Sunday Dinner when she prepared a meal for the entire family. As time passed, children and grandchildren became the ones to prepare the meal for Bettie. Many games of Yahtzee, dominoes, and marbles were played together. The grandchildren were lucky to be able to spend quality time with their entire family twice a week.

Bettie looked forward to getting together with her retired teacher friends. She was a member of WCREA (Washington County Retired Educators Organization) and also WREA (Wisconsin Retired Teachers Association). Bettie was recognized by the WREA for being a member for over 20 years.
Bettie was preceded in death in May 2026 by her devoted husband Jim, who she was married to for 68 years. She was also preceded in death by a sister Lorraine and a brother, Norman. She is survived by her children Cathie, Terry (Elizabeth), and Tammy (Greg) Perkins. Also her grandchildren Spencer, Dylan, and Mara Perkins, and Abigail (Alan) Christianson. She is further survived by her sisters Mae (Vern) Dvorak and Leatta Pudwill. There are many other relatives and friends who will miss her dearly.

Bettie will be remembered as a generous woman with spirit and a deep sense of pride in her upbringing and her family. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of everyone she knew.
