She then completed the teaching program at the Fond du Lac Normal School in 1931. After school, Bernice began her teaching career at Ash Grove School in the town of Fond du Lac.

She was a member of the senior choir and the women's fellowship group. Strong in her faith, Bernice was also proud to be a member of the Church Women United which brings together women of different cultures through prayer.

Bernice thrived through volunteering. For 62 years, she dedicated many hours to the Washington County Association for Home and Community Education or HCE.
