Alan Arthur Grimm, 91, passed away peacefully on October 30, 2024, in DeForest, Wisconsin, surrounded by love, family, and a lifetime of memories.
Alan was born in 1932 to John and Catherine Grimm in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, as the youngest of 12 children. After serving his country in the Army and spending a few memorable years stationed in Okinawa, he met and married the love of his life, Susan (née Yasuko Itokazu), on May 24, 1958. Together, they shared 66 years filled with adventure, joy, and family.
Family was everything to Alan. He thrived in the company of his large extended family, which included a legion of siblings, nieces, nephews, children, and grandchildren. As the gentle and beloved patriarch, he took great pride in being a steady presence for his loved ones. Alan is survived by his devoted wife, Susan; his children, Anna Mae (Rodd), Arthur (Sarah), Theresa (Tsunemi), Philip (Nancy), Elizabeth (Jim), and Jonathan (Margie); and his grandchildren, Nash (Erin) and Anna, Catalina and Cayman, Koichiro, Eileen, Reo, Claire, Lila, and Carina, Analese and Alex, and Jack and Lucy.
A lifelong resident of Wisconsin, Alan attended UW Madison, where he earned a degree in Chemistry, and later completed his Master's at Marquette. In 1964, he began a long and fulfilling career as an Associate Professor of Chemistry with the UW System. His career even took him on a teaching sabbatical to Kuala Lumpur from 1986 to 1988, an adventure he cherished. After retiring, Alan and Susan traveled to dozens of countries, cultivated their garden, played endless rounds of bridge, and spent cherished time pontooning on Big Cedar Lake at their home in Slinger, Wisconsin.
A devout Catholic, Alan was also a lifelong enthusiast of classical music, and he could often be found singing in the church choir, adding his voice to the music he loved so much.
A visitation and Memorial Mass will be held to honor Alan's life at Saint Peter's Catholic Church in Slinger, Wisconsin, on Saturday, December 14. Visitation will begin at 10:00, with Mass to follow at 11:00. Friends and family are invited to join in celebrating a remarkable life, well-lived and well-loved.
