Obituary

Agnes Ella Monfils-Curry was born on ground hog day in Brussels, Wisconsin in 1934.   The baby of a family of 6 children to Fabian and Rose Gerondale-Monfils.  The family moved to Green Bay in 1944 where Agnes attended Green Bay East high School and graduated class of 1952. In 1953 Agnes worked the lunch counter at Grimmer Drug Store on the corner of Washington and Main Streets, where she caught the eye of Jack Curry, who worked for the RCA Corporation. He was sent up to Green Bay from Milwaukee for work and flirted his way across her lunch counter. She soon moved to Milwaukee and took a job at Allen Bradley Corporation, but she had to conceal the fact that she was engaged to Jack to retain her employment.  Jack and Agnes were married May 7 th , 1955, and welcomed their first child, Joanne Curry (Sleger) on April 27 th , 1958. Living at 5737 S. Melinda Street in Milwaukee, next to Peter and Edna Suchon, the families forged a friendship that lasted over 62 years.  Edna remained one of Agnes' best friends to the very end; calling Agnes every morning and every afternoon as they found themselves neighbors again at her final home in West Bend. William (Bill) Curry was born October 17 th , 1960, and David Curry was born March 12 th , 1963, followed by Colleen Curry-Lake on May 14 th , 1969. The Curry family moved to West Bend in 1973 to a place where Agnes found her own paradise. There was a fieldstone farmhouse and five acres of land that Agnes cultivated with fruit trees, a huge garden that she had to guard from the bunnies with her trusty .22, chickens, bees, and a wonderful place to raise a family. Jack always said, "You can take the girl out of the country, but you can't take the country out of the girl." She was a testament to hard work, focus, and diversity of skills. She had also learned masonry skills from her father Fabian and rebuilt the chimney on top of that 3-story fieldstone farmhouse. She also trenched around the "new house" on Highway 33 and dug a French drain when she discovered water seeping into the basement. Besides her excellent management of farmstead affairs, Agnes worked on and off outside of the home supplementing Jack's income. Again, her diverse skill set worked to her advantage in places like West Bend Company, a variety of cleaning jobs, doing tailoring and alterations, selling honey, beeswax, garden produce, making maple syrup, and the shrewd investment of her funds to build a stock portfolio that she was rightfully proud of. Jack left us in 2014 after a long decline from Alzheimer's.  Agnes cared for him all his life and no less so in his final years. They were married for 59 years at the time of his passing.

Agnes was also preceded in death by her brothers, Wilfred, Elmer, and Darrell, and her sister Grace Mueller. Her sister, Marie Zarnoth, lives in Green Bay and remained her life-long close friend. Also preceding her in death was her daughter, Joanne in 2012. Joanne's death from cancer was eased by hospice care in her mother's home. Joanne's former husband, Mark Sleger, and Agnes' grandchildren, Jack Swartz, and Clair and Andrew Sleger, along with his wife, Nichole Rammer, were by Agnes' side in her final days.

Agnes is also survived by her sons, Bill and Dave. Judy Bruckert-Curry, Dave's wife, Colleen Curry-Lake and her husband, Christopher Lake, her extended family Helena Kaiser, Josh Kaiser and family, loving friends Michelle Smith and Edna Suchon.

Special thanks to the County Club Line Dance group that Agnes and Jack enjoyed for many years and Mom's friends that met over the years to play poker and share food and friendship.  It meant a lot to Mom. Thanks also to the precious group of nieces and nephews and their families who came often to pick up Agnes and take her to dinners and keep her connected with those friends and families.  Mike and Starr Schuetz, Ray and Betty George, Kathy George, Delores and Bobby Korbel, Pauline and Jeff Zell, Terry and Theresa Zarnoth, Joyce, Steve, Larry and Ed Mueller and their families. Many extended family and friends.

Agnes was a true renaissance woman. She was competent with her hands and her mind in ways that is rare and wonderful. She was blessed with 90 years of health and love, and she passed quickly when it was her time. Her life ended on June 19 th , 2024. We will miss her deeply, but her legacy continues in the many that she influenced during her time with us.
